Private catamaran in Tenerife: when it is worth it and when it is not

A boat just for your group sounds expensive, and for two people it is: €390 for three hours. For a group of six to eleven, though, it works out at €65 or less each, with skipper, drinks and food, and nobody else on deck. Here are the numbers before you book.

Is it worth it? Do the maths per head

The price is per boat, not per person: €130 an hour, in three formats of 3, 4 and 5 hours. Here is the short trip, 3 hours for €390, depending on group size: €195 each for two, €97.50 for four, €65 for six and about €35.50 for eleven, the maximum. The long one, 5 hours with paella and wine, is €650: about €108 each for six and about €59 each for eleven. Our take: for a couple it is not worth it if you just want to see the coast; that is what the shared whale and dolphin trip is for, from €28 per person. It pays off from five or six people, and above all when you want the day on the boat your way: your music, your pace and nobody else on board.

3, 4 or 5 hours: which to choose

The route is the same in all three: from Playa San Juan to the Los Gigantes cliffs, anchoring in Masca Bay. What changes is how long you stay there and what you eat. With 3 hours you get drinks (water, Coca-Cola Zero, Sprite and Dorada beer) and salty snacks: enough for the trip, a long swim and back. With 4, the same drinks and assorted tapas, which is a proper spread. With 5, white wine is added and a meat paella, chicken and pork, for the whole group: the one that makes sense if the trip falls over lunchtime and you do not want to look for a restaurant afterwards. If someone in the group does not eat meat, the 4-hour trip is usually the easiest fit. None of them is an open bar: each format has its set quantities.

Worth knowing before you book

It leaves from Playa San Juan harbour, in the south-west. If you are staying in Costa Adeje or Los Gigantes it is close; from the north or Santa Cruz, allow a good while by car, and transfer is not included. There is room for 11 people at most, plus the skipper. It is not a whale-watching trip: dolphins or pilot whales may turn up in the area, but nobody can promise it and the boat does not go looking for them. On board there is snorkel gear, a paddle board, a bow net to lie on, a sunshade and a Bluetooth speaker. The skipper speaks Spanish; we help you in Spanish, English and French before and after.

Frequently asked questions

Is a private catamaran worth it for two?

The 3-hour trip works out at €195 each. If you want a special occasion and the boat to yourselves, it can make sense; if you only want to see the coast, the shared whale and dolphin trip costs from €28 per person.

Is it better than a shared boat trip?

It is different. On a shared trip you pay per seat and go with other people; here you pay for the boat and choose the music, the pace and how long you swim. For groups of six or more, the price per head is similar and the experience is far more your own.

Will we see whales or dolphins?

It can happen, as cetaceans live in the area, but this is not a whale-watching trip and nobody can promise it. If seeing them matters most, the whale-watching trip is designed for exactly that.

3, 4 or 5 hours?

3 hours for the trip and a swim with snacks; 4 if you want tapas and more time in Masca; 5 if the trip falls over lunchtime, since it includes paella and wine.

What if someone does not want to swim?

Nobody has to go in the water. They can stay on the bow net, under the sunshade or eating while the others snorkel or paddle.

Can children come?

No minimum age is published. Children count towards the maximum of 11 people: tell us their ages when booking and we will confirm with the boat.

Is there a meat-free option?

The paella on the 5-hour trip is chicken and pork. If someone does not eat meat or has allergies, tell us beforehand and we will ask the boat; we will not promise a different menu without checking.

How do I get to Playa San Juan?

On your own: transfer is not included. It is in the south-west, between Costa Adeje and Los Gigantes. With the voucher we send you the exact spot in the harbour where the boat waits.

How is the booking confirmed?

Naventia Trips checks availability, provider conditions and the traveller's level before confirming the experience.

Can you tell me what else to do on those days?

Yes, and it is what we get asked most. Tell us which days you have free and where you are staying, and we will say what pairs well with this excursion and what should not go on the same day.
